Giannantonio hopes to stay in MotoGP as Honda remains the only option

Fabio di Giannantonio has opened up about the possibility to join Repsol Honda in order to rescue his MotoGP career.

Marc Marquez will take over Di Giannantonio’s Gresini Ducati seat in 2024, it was announced at the Indonesian MotoGP this past weekend after it had been a topic of discussion for several weeks.

Now that Marquez is vacating his Repsol Honda seat, there is only one open spot in the 2024 MotoGP rider lineup.

“Let’s see… At the moment, I still don’t know,” Di Giannantonio talked about his personal ambitions to secure the last-ditch opportunity to remain in MotoGP. “My staff are working on my future. We are trying to understand the best option for next year.

“There are options in MotoGP. We are trying to find a seat in MotoGP, that’s the main goal at the moment.

“Honda has a place. For sure, it’s one of the most historic and iconic teams in MotoGP. It would be an amazing option for me.

“Even if, at the moment, the bike seems that it’s not at 100%, they are struggling, Honda is a huge factory with all the competence to make progress.

“For sure, they will come back,” he speculated. “Why not be the guy at the top of this project? It’s something I would be proud of.”

Regarding his own tiny part in the Marquez drama, Di Giannantonio stated: “In MotoGP, you have to establish your worth every time you walk on the track and during every practice.

“It’s not that I need to demonstrate it more at this time.

“Maybe for you, this is new! It’s the breaking news of the moment. I knew about this for a long time.

“It’s a situation which creates pressure, but I like pressure.”

Rumors that Maverick Vinales and Miguel Oliveira are Honda’s preferred candidates for the open seats drew responses from each of the riders.

Johann Zarco, who will officially start riding for LCR Honda in 2024, has also hinted that he may opt to shift right to Repsol Honda.

Di Giannantonio will likely return to Moto2 if he is unable to secure the final Honda slot. He is now ranked 16th ahead of the Indonesian MotoGP.
