Ferrari extends Fred Vasseur contract as F1 team boss in new multi-year deal

Fred Vasseur contract extension as Ferrari team principal has been officially confirmed after signing a new multi-year deal, ending months of speculation surrounding the Formula 1 boss.

The news, announced just ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, puts an end to months of speculation surrounding Vasseur’s future amid a disappointing start to the 2025 F1 season.

For Ferrari, this extension is far more than a procedural continuation; it is a decisive gesture that signals confidence, continuity, and strategic intent as the team looks to reclaim the heights of Formula 1 dominance and prepare for the sweeping 2026 regulation changes.

“Renewing Fred Vasseur contract reflects Ferrari’s determination to build on the foundations laid so far,” Ferrari wrote in a statement.

“Fred’s ability to lead under pressure, embrace innovation, and pursue performance aligns fully with Ferrari’s values and long-term ambitions. Under Fred’s leadership, Scuderia Ferrari HP is united, focused, and committed to continuous improvement.

“The trust placed in him reflects the team’s confidence in its strategic direction and reinforces a shared determination to deliver the results that Ferrari’s fans, drivers, and team members expect and deserve.”

Fred Vasseur assumed leadership of the Scuderia at the start of the 2023, stepping into the role following the exit of Mattia Binotto who had overseen an era marked by early promise but ultimately thwarted by reliability issues and a slower development trajectory compared to rivals.

From the outset, Vasseur faced the daunting challenge of not only restoring competitive performance on the track but also rekindling the broader organizational culture and spirit underpinning Ferrari’s racing operations.

The 57-year old Frenchman had previously led the Sauber F1 team and built a reputation for nurturing talent, fostering team cohesion, and eluding headline-grabbing controversies even in the most pressured environments.

After taking up the Ferrari team principal role, Vasseur has steered the Scuderia through a period of substantial transformation and has been instrumental in developing both the team’s human and technical resources.

Notably, Vasseur played a pivotal role in facilitating the headline-hitting acquisition of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton who joined Ferrari from Mercedes for the 2025 F1 season—a coup that underscored his persuasive clout within the paddock.

Alongside Hamilton, Charles Leclerc remains a central pillar of the driver lineup giving Ferrari one of the most formidable pairings on the grid.

“I’m grateful for the trust Ferrari continues to place in me,” Vasseur said on his extension. “This renewal is not just a confirmation – it’s a challenge to keep progressing, to stay focused, and to deliver.

“Over the past 30 months, we’ve laid strong foundations, and now we must build on them with consistency and determination.

“We know what’s expected, and we’re all fully committed to meeting those expectations and taking the next step forward together.”

However, the team has struggled to maintain momentum in the 2025 F1 season, grappling with the challenges presented by inconsistent performance of the F1-75 and the complexities of integrating Hamilton and Leclerc’s respective driving styles.

Ferrari’s bid for early season victories was stymied by technical gremlins with the high-profile plank wear debacle in China leading to both team cars being disqualified.

In response to the disqualification, the team moved swiftly to introduce upgrades including an updated rear suspension system in Belgium—a timely intervention that saw Leclerc return to the podium and Hamilton make a strong recovery from a pit lane start.

These actions underscore Vasseur’s ability to pivot and implement mid-season corrective measures, a skill set crucial as the team prepares for the significant regulatory overhaul coming in 2026 F1.
