The 2027 MotoGP rider market has reportedly marked its first seismic move as Fabio Quartararo signs with Honda ahead of the sport’s major regulatory overhaul.
According to Motorsport.com, the French superstar has signed a multi-year deal covering 2027 and 2028 after years of frustration with Yamaha’s declining competitiveness, positioning him as the cornerstone of Honda’s revival efforts ahead of MotoGP’s transformative 2027 regulations.
Quartararo brings an illustrious resume, including the 2021 MotoGP world championship title, 11 race victories, 32 podium finishes, and 21 pole positions—all achieved aboard Yamaha’s YZR-M1 machinery since his debut in 2019.
As the first major domino to fall in the 2027 MotoGP silly season, Quartararo’s decision culminates months of speculation fueled by Yamaha’s inability to deliver a consistently competitive M1 despite renewed investments promised in his April 2024 contract extension.
While Yamaha kept their word on fulfilling the financial commitments with the rider, they have struggled with development of the bike which lacks straight-line speed and stability in corner exits.
The 2025 season offered a glimmer of hope with five poles, a Spanish GP runner-up (first podium since 2023 Indonesia), but DNFs at France, Britain, Aragon, and elsewhere left him ninth in the standings with 201 points, fueling exit talks.
Quartararo also hinted strained relations with top management after Lin Jarvis exit in 2024, admitting minimal communication with current managing director Paolo Pavesio.
“I don’t speak much with Paolo,” the 26-year old rider said at the Australian GP last year. “The people I’m interested in are the ones in the garage. I speak more with the engineers than with him.”
However, Fabio Quartararo‘s move to Honda HRC will be determined after riding the latest version of the Yamaha V4 which is making its debut at this week’s Sepang Shakedown, although chances are high he has already made the decision even before testing the new machine.
Quartararo’s exit would be Yamaha’s biggest rider loss since Jorge Lorenzo’s switch to Ducati at the conclusion of 2016. However, it might be the start of their comeback to competitiveness like Honda in 2025 following the departure of seven-time MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez.
If Fabio Quartararo signs with Honda, either Joan Mir or Luca Marini—who have their contracts expiring at the end of 2026—would have to leave the factory team, since LCR has locked in Johann Zarco and rookie team-mate Diogo Moreira on multi-year deals until next year.
But that would be a tough decision to make; while Mir has gradually outperformed Marini, the latter is more consistent and influential in bike development.
On the other hand, Yamaha could promote Toprak Razgatlioglu should he perform well in 2026 or alternatively seek an external star such as Jorge Martin or Pedro Acosta who has been under their radar in recent months.
