Elfyn Evans spearheaded a historic Toyota GR 1-2-3-4 to claim victory at Rally Sweden 2026 marking his third career World Rally Championship win in the iconic snow and ice event.
The Welsh driver stormed to the top of the drivers’ standings after snagging his first triumph of the season by 14.3s from Toyota teammates Takamoto Katsuta, Sami Pajari and Oliver Solberg as Hyundai struggled.
Held in the frozen forests around Umeå from February 12 to 15, the rally spanned over 300 kilometers of competitive stages on snow-packed gravel roads, testing drivers’ abilities to manage tire wear, grip on variable surfaces, and split-second decision-making in conditions where a single mistake could end a challenge prematurely.
The event kicked off on Thursday evening with a short super special stage in central Umeå, where local hero Oliver Solberg set the early pace in his Toyota GR Yaris Rally1, edging out teammate Elfyn Evans by a narrow margin, while Takamoto Katsuta lurked close in third.
Friday’s full leg, comprising seven stages totaling around 125 kilometers, unfolded as a high-speed battle on fast, flowing roads blanketed in fresh powder with Toyota drivers immediately asserting control as the top four positions remained firmly in their grasp from the outset.
Katsuta capitalized on superior tire management to win stages SS5 Bydsiljum and SS6 Andersvattnet 2, clawing back time from Evans and snatching the overnight lead by 2.8s after SS7 Bäck 2 where Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville notched the manufacturer’s sole stage win of the day.
Evans and co-driver Scott Martin remained composed despite the pressure, posting consistent top-three times and only dropping behind by a tenth of a second at the day’s end, while Sami Pajari and Solberg held third and fourth, the latter hampered slightly by an early off and a puncture.
Hyundai endured a frustrating Friday with Esapekka Lappi—returning after a 18-month hiatus—showing flashes of his snow expertise to stay in the top six, but balance issues plagued teammates Neuville and Adrien Fourmaux, leaving them fifth and sixth respectively by Friday night.
Saturday saw Evans strike back decisively to erase Katsuta’s lead and build a 16.1-second advantage by midday.
Katsuta, battling front-end understeer and suboptimal tire performance, fought valiantly but couldn’t close the gap particularly as he hunted for setup tweaks amid deepening ruts that chewed through rubber.
Sunday’s finale brought high drama as Katsuta won the penultimate Västervik test to pressure Evans, but the Welshman responded with an 8.2-second burst on the repeat, reclaiming control before managing the gap flawlessly on the Umeå Power Stage.
Neuville salvaged Hyundai pride with maximum Power Stage points, finishing just 0.078s ahead of Evans who held his nerve to claim the overall victory at Rally Sweden 2026 by 14.3s over Katsuta.
Pajari sealed the podium marking steady progress in his sophomore WRC season, while Solberg settled for fourth. Fourmaux led the Hyundai effort in fifth followed by teammates Lappi and Neuville.
M-Sport Ford faced tire selection woes on the deep snow with debutant Jon Armstrong and Josh McErlean holding eighth and ninth, while Mārtiņš Sesks demonstrated raw pace with a stage win later but retired early on Friday after a setback, eliminating any podium threat.
Roope Korhonen finished tenth overall to claim WRC2 victory by over ten seconds over teammate Teemu Suninen as Lauri Joona completed the class podium.
