
Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard recovered from front wing damage and a puncture to win chaotic and unpredictable 2026 IndyCar XPEL Grand Prix at Road America.
Lundgaard found himself in last place after Lap 1 collision, but his strategic brilliance, relentless pace and a cascade of late-race incidents propelled the No. 7 Chevy to victory by 0.6 seconds over David Malukas.
The 55-lap contest on the legendary 4.014-mile Road America circuit saw pole-sitter Alex Palou lead the field from green in his No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, with the No. 12 Team Penske Chevy of Malukas following closely.
However, chaos erupted behind as Lundgaard ran into the rear wheel of Scott Dixon and damaged his front wing significantly, forcing him to immediately pit for a replacement. The stop dropped him to last place among the 25 cars still running.
Meanwhile, the race up front unfolded largely as many had predicted with Palou leading Marcus Armstrong by 4.6 seconds before the first major pit-stop cycle on Lap 14.
Felix Rosenqvist took over the lead as the leaders pitted, however, disaster struck in the pit lane for Romain Grosjean who lost a wheel after his stop, bringing out the caution.
Rosenqvist pitted under the caution and beat Palou to the exit, securing fresh tires and maintaining his position at the front as the race resumed.

On lap 29, Palou pitted from second but he was handed a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane, dropping him to 20th place. His teammate Dixon was also slapped with a similar sanction for his involvement in the opening lap incident.
A lap later Christian Rasmussen stalled on the track, bringing out another caution on Lap 31. Rosenqvist headed to the pits under the yellow as Armstrong cycled to the lead.
When the race resumed on Lap 36, Armstrong led Malukas and Alexander Rossi, with Palou in 8th place after serving his penalty, while Rosenqvist was down in 11th.

Palou passed Louis Foster for seventh before locking into a tense duel with Will Power who ultimately gave up sixth.
Armstrong pitted from the lead with 13 laps to go, dropping to sixth-place behind Lundgaard as Malukas, Rossi, Kyffin Simpson and Palou pitted the following lap.
Lundgaard took over the lead for the next two laps before making his final pit stop on Lap 45. He rejoined in 7th, while Armstrong cycled back to the top spot with Malukas trailing by 3.6 seconds.

Rosenqvist and Dixon pitted on Lap 47 as Josef Newgarden and Pato O’Ward followed suit a lap later, shuffling Lundgaard to third.
Lundgaard dived on the outside of Malukas at Turn 5 on Lap 49 to take second place behind Armstrong who was leading by 3.8s.
Over the next three laps Lundgaard closed the gap to within a car length of Armstrong, but the No. 66 Meyer Shank Racing Honda began to give out clouds of smoke, bringing out the caution on lap 52.
Marcus Armstrong‘s engine failure handed Lundgaard the lead uncontested, and on the final restart with one lap to go, Lundgaard led Malukas. Meanwhile, Nolan Siegel spun at Turn Five but no caution was called.
However, chaos struck again when Will Power bumped the rear of Graham Rahal as the two battled for the final podium spot, sending Rahal deep into the gravel pit and bringing out a full-course caution.
The caution effectively ended any chance of a last-lap shootout, and the writing was on the wall Christian Lundgaard wins IndyCar XPEL Grand Prix at Road America. David Malukas took second, while Power kept his podium finish after officials determined he was not at fault for the late incident.
