Christian Lundgaard edged out David Malukas in a thrilling late duel to seal his first IndyCar win with Arrow McLaren at the 2026 Sonsio Grand Prix at Indianapolis road course.
Lundgaard, piloting the No. 7 Chevrolet, made a decisive pass on Malukas with 18 laps remaining and proceeded to claim victory by 4.6713s, snapping a grueling 47-race winless streak—his first since July 2023 in Toronto.
From the drop of the green, chaos erupted almost immediately at Turn 1, where Felix Rosenqvist‘s No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Honda locked up and spun into Pato O’Ward’s No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, collecting Chip Ganassi’s Scott Dixon and rookie Caio Collet in the No. 4 A.J. Foyt Racing Chevrolet in the melee.
Rosenqvist copped a drive-through penalty for causing Lap 1 crash, dropping him down the order as the incident set a tone of unpredictability that would define the afternoon.
Under full course caution, the field bunched up as polesitter Alex Palou maintained the lead from Lap 5 followed by David Malukas, Graham Rahal, Kyle Kirkwood, Romain Grosjean, Santino Ferrucci, Christian Lundgaard, Christian Rasmussen, Marcus Armstrong and Scott McLaughlin.
Palou proceeded to eke out a 3.9-second gap over Kirkwood, but a strategy error by his Chip Ganassi crew – who misjudged a local yellow on Lap 23 for Alexander Rossi’s stalled car to be a full course caution – saw Palou and Kirkwood stay out while Lundgaard and Malukas pitted.
Once the full-course yellow flew, Palou and Kirkwood came into the pits on Lap 25 and dropped to 19th and 20th, as Will Power assumed the lead followed by Malukas, while Lundgaard passed Rahal for third.
Lap 28 saw Sting Ray Robb crash into O’Ward after locking his brakes at Turn 13, collecting Kyffin Simpson who tried to avoid contact but was hit by Rosenqvist, whose car went airborne.
Power continued leading under caution before pitting on Lap 31, handing Malukas the lead with Lundgaard and Rahal behind.
By Lap 45 Malukas had built a gap of 1.7s over Lundgaard and 4.3s over Rahal in third, but a series of pit stops saw Power cycle back to the lead from Lap 48.
Malukas took back the top spot after Power stopped for a fresh set of alternates on Lap 58, but the No. 26 Andretti Global Honda locked up leaving the pits, leading to a drive-through penalty.
Lundgaard hounded Malukas for the next 7 laps and ultimately pulled off a bold overtake on the No.12 Team Penske Chevrolet at the tight Turn 9 hairpin on Lap 67 to take the lead all the way to the checkered flag.

“Wild. It was a long day out there,“ Lundgaard said. “It’s just so unfortunate in the beginning at the start of the race. I was so bummed for Pato because I think we had a really good plan for us as a team [for] how we were going to attack the day. Just is so unfortunate for him.
“Obviously, we had two cars in the top four, which gave us a good chance at least with one car, and how the strategy just happened to play out gave us the best chance. Obviously, the pass on both Graham and Malukas was really the deciders today.“
Malukas was equally happy despite losing out on a possible first win: “Well, honestly, it was just a matter of attrition. You know, we knew almost 40 laps before that time was going to come.
“You saw how we took off at the end there, but overall, it’s a fantastic result for us. You know, we went into this weekend thinking we were going to struggle, and here we are on the podium in P2. So it’s fantastic!“
