Catalan MotoGP Sprint highlights: Alex Marquez pips Pedro Acosta to win, Jorge Martin crashes

Alex Marquez secured a nail-biting victory at the 2026 Catalan MotoGP Sprint, beating Pedro Acosta by just 0.041 seconds, while title‑contender Jorge Martin suffered yet another crash.

The 12-lap Sprint at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya unfolded as one of the most dramatic sprint races in recent memory, with Marquez taking the lead on Lap 4 from pole-sitter Acosta and then fending off a fierce final-lap attack from the KTM rider to claim his first Sprint victory of the 2026 season.

This result not only banished the ghosts of last year’s heartbreaking home disappointment for the Spanish rider but also intensified the championship battle, with Marco Bezzecchi maintaining his overall lead, just two points ahead of the crashed Martin, while Acosta reclaimed third place in the standings after his strong second-place finish.

The race began with Acosta converting his pole position into an immediate lead off the start, demonstrating the KTM’s strong straight-line speed and acceleration out of the main straight into the first corner.

However, chaos unfolded at Turn 1 as Brad Binder made contact with Fabio Di Giannantonio and crashed out, tagging Joan Mir on his way to the gravel in a disappointing end to both riders’ race.

Johann Zarco took advantage of the melee to jump into second place but Marquez used Ducati’s superior pace to reclaim the position down the main straight, setting his eyes on race leader Acosta.

Meanwhile, Raul Fernandez and Aprilia stablemate Jorge Martin locked in a close battle for fourth, swapping position back-and-forth, with Di Giannantonio taking advantage to get ahead of the duo, before Fernandez clawed back to fourth at Turn 5 on Lap 3.

Martin dropped to sixth but carried just a fraction too much speed into Turn 10 which tucked the front end under the extra load of a tailwind and the worn‑edge edge of his front tyre, ultimately sending him crashing into the run-off and out of the race.

On Lap 4, Marquez executed a perfectly timed overtaking maneuver on the defensive Acosta by under braking for Turn 1, to take the lead and appeared to settle into cruise control as he began to build a small gap over the charging KTM.

Acosta appeared to be struggling and Fernandez passed him for second place on Lap 6, but the former reclaimed the spot with four laps remaining and began to chase Marquez who was leading by six tenths.

The drama heightened significantly as the race entered its final laps, with Acosta closing the gap to Marquez by half, setting up what would become one of the most thrilling showdowns in Catalan MotoGP Sprint highlights.

However, Marquez held his nerve and managed to cross the finish line just 0.041 seconds ahead of Acosta, marking the closest finish in Sprint history.

Di Giannantonio claimed the last step of the podium after passing Fernandez on the main straight with three laps to go, while Zarco rounded out the top five.
