Jorge Martin seized the lead on the final lap with a daring overtake on early dominator Francesco Bagnaia to claim his first Sprint win with Aprilia at the Americas MotoGP.
The race, held on Saturday amid high drama, saw Marco Bezzecchi crash out from a strong second position while Marc Marquez‘s aggressive move triggered a multi-rider pile-up, reshaping the championship battle in this iconic round of the MotoGP calendar.
From the moment the lights went out, the factory Ducatis asserted their trademark dominance with Francesco Bagnaia exploding off the line from fourth on the grid to snatch the holeshot into Turn 1 with surgical accuracy.
Bagnaia proceeded to build a rhythm that looked unassailable, pulling a gap of over half a second by the end of the opening lap as he leaned into the sweeping esses of COTA’s challenging layout.
Right behind him, championship leader Marco Bezzecchi on his Aprilia RS-GP26 carved through the pack from fourth, his aggressive lines and late-braking prowess propelling him into second place by Lap 2.
Marc Marquez, meanwhile, muscled his Ducati from sixth to third with a trademark fearless dive into Turn 12 on the first lap, but his momentum turned chaotic as he clipped pole-sitter Fabio Di Giannantonio, sending both riders tumbling into the gravel in a high-speed shunt.
Marquez crash eliminated Di Giannantonio as the stewards deemed the eight-time world champion at fault for reckless riding, handing him a Long Lap penalty for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
The incident scattered debris across the track prompting a brief yellow flag, yet Bagnaia pressed on extending his advantage to nearly a second as Bezzecchi fended off the charging pack.
Further back, Jorge Martin embodied patience with a clever strategy that saw him opt for the medium compound rear over the softer alternative chosen by all frontrunners, which paid early dividends.
Starting from seventh, Martin methodically picked off riders in the mid-pack shuffle while conserving his medium rear tyre without excessive wear, clawing his Aprilia into fourth by Lap 3.
As Bagnaia pushed hard at the front, hitting sector times that harkened back to his 2024 title-winning form, Martin shadowed Bezzecchi in a duel that saw the Aprilia teammates trade fastest laps.
Bezzecchi was in imperious form reeling in Bagnaia lap by lap with a series of personal best sectors as his Aprilia danced on the edge of grip through the high-speed Turn 9 sweeper.
By Lap 5, the gap was under four tenths and Bezzecchi’s championship lead seemed poised for extension, yet fate intervened brutally on Lap 6 at the notorious downhill Turn 8 right-hander, where the Italian rider highsided violently while pushing to overtake, sliding into the barriers at over 280 km/h in a cloud of carbon fiber shards and tire smoke.
After Bezzecchi crash, Martin inherited second and immediately executed his tyre genius to set a string of fastest laps from Lap 7, closing to within two tenths by the penultimate tour.
Bagnaia defended valiantly, his Ducati’s straightline speed keeping Martin at bay through the acceleration zone, but Martin’s late-braking masterclass at Turn 12âthe same corner that claimed Marquezâproved decisive on the final lap.
Diving inside with ice-cool nerve, Martin took the lead all the way to cross the line 0.755 seconds clear of Bagnaia, marking his first Sprint win with Aprilia and since 2024 with Ducati.
Jorge Martin winning wheelie celebration added a strange final twist because he crashed on the cool-down lap, but that did not take away from the quality of the victory which also lifted him to the top of the ridersâ standings after one of the most dramatic sprint races of the season.
Behind the leading duo, Pedro Acosta secured a richly deserved podium in third, fending off a late charge from Enea Bastianini, whose Tech3 KTM mirrored the factory bike’s pace but lacked the final-lap punch to challenge.
