Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi delivered a commanding performance to top the rain-affected Friday practice sessions at the 2026 MotoGP season opener in Thailand, signaling his intent as a title contender.
Bezzecchi thrived in unpredictable conditions with dark clouds overhead and unleashed a stunning final flyer of 1:28.526, breaking the existing Buriram lap record which he had set during pre-season testing.
Marc Marquez overcame early left-side woes with a late charge to claim second, 0.421s adrift of Bezzecchi, but edged Ducati stablemate Fabio Di Giannantonio by 0.073s for third.
Pedro Acosta paced his KTM through the tricky conditions to claim the fourth fastest lap, while Jorge Martin completed the Aprilia lockout of the top five, both factory machines securing automatic Q2 spots.
Alex Marquez vaulted to sixth on the Gresini Ducati as Joan Mir marked the last rider to scrape within a second off the benchmark in seventh on the Honda HRC.
Brad Binder ensured KTM representation in the top 10 with eighth, while Ai Ogura clung to ninth despite crashing at Turn 7 in the final three minutes—a minor high-side that didn’t prevent his Q2 progression.
Johann Zarco snatched 10th for LCR Honda, pipping Luca Marini by a whisker, as Maverick Vinales missed out by 0.033s in 12th on the Tech 3 KTM.
Francesco Bagnaia missed out on a direct Q2 spot after a conservative run due to rain threat with his late improvement only good enough for P15.
