The Series has released new IndyCar IOWA Schedule following cancellation of Friday’s practice sessions due to severe weather.
The abrupt halt to on-track activities was prompted by a powerful storm system that swept through Newton, Iowa, bringing with it tornado warnings, torrential rain, and the ever-present risk that comes with unpredictable Midwest summer weather.
The 2025 Iowa Speedway doubleheader was set to feature two marquee races—the Synk 275 powered by Sukup and the Farm to Finish 275—alongside a full slate of practice and qualifying sessions.
However, as Friday afternoon progressed the weather took a turn for the worst, forcing officials to make the difficult but necessary decision to cancel all remaining track activities for the day.
The first indication of trouble came as dark clouds gathered over the speedway, accompanied by ominous weather alerts from local authorities and the National Weather Service which issued a tornado warning for the region.
Track officials responded swiftly urging fans, teams, and drivers to seek shelter immediately. The lack of basements or designated storm shelters at Iowa Speedway forced people to take refuge in their vehicles or seek out any substantial structures available on the property.
As the storm intensified, reports emerged of a possible tornado touching down near the speedway. Photographs and videos circulated on social media with some including driver Scott McLaughlin capturing dramatic images of what appeared to be a tornado or a rotating wall cloud in the vicinity of the track.
While the National Weather Service later clarified that it had not officially confirmed a tornado touchdown, the threat was real enough to warrant the suspension of all activities.
The cancellation of Friday’s IndyCar IOWA practice posed significant challenges for teams and drivers. Without track running, teams were left with less data and limited opportunities to fine-tune their setups for the demanding Iowa circuit.
The subsequent standard practice session was also lost, compressing the already tight schedule and increasing the pressure on teams to adapt quickly once on-track activities resumed.
The series released a statement: “NTT IndyCar Series races will be held as scheduled. The Synk 275 powered by Sukup is set for 5 p.m. ET Saturday followed by the Farm to Finish 275 powered by Sukup at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
“Both races will air live on FOX, the FOX Sports app and the IndyCar Radio Network.
“The NTT IndyCar Series will be first on the 0.894-mile oval Saturday with install laps beginning at 9:55 a.m. followed by 30 minutes of high-line group running. All cars will get 45 minutes of regular practice beginning at 10:45 a.m. FS2 will air live coverage of the sessions.
“The 75-lap INDY NXT by Firestone at Iowa Speedway race will be held at noon ET on FS1.
“NTT IndyCar Series qualifying will move to 1:30 p.m. on FS1. Each car will be permitted two timed laps, the first helping to set the starting lineup for the Synk 275 powered by Sukup. The second lap will do the same for the Farm to Finish 275 powered by Sukup.”
