Marcin Budkowski leaves Alpine F1 team

Marcin Budkowski has stepped down as Alpine’s Executive Director with immediate effect.

Alpine Formula 1 team has officially announced Marcin Budkowski will be stepping down from his role as the team’s Executive Director.

Budkowski joined the team at the end of the 2017 season when it was branded Renault. Having previously worked at FIA, his move to a Formula 1 team received a lot of criticism and controversy. Prior to joining Formula One’s governing body, he worked for Ferrari and McLaren.

Budkowski’s prominence grew after the departure of Cyril Abiteboul as Team Principal taking up his roles as the team principal. However, on Thursday his departure was confirmed by the team.

With Budkowski stepping down, Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi is set to take on Budkowski’s responsibilities on interim basis.

“I truly enjoyed being part of the leadership team of Renault then Alpine, working with such a talented and dedicated group of people,” said Budkowski.

“I will be watching the team’s progress fondly in the seasons to come.”

Rossi also commented on Budkowski’s departure: “I would like to thank Marcin for his commitment and contribution to the team’s results over the last four years.”

“The team is fully focused on getting the car ready for the first race in Bahrain and deliver a step beyond in performance.”

Last year, Alpine placed fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, as Esteban Ocon securing the team’s first victory since its rebranding. Budkowski’s departure creates a senior management position within the Enstone-based organization. Alpine has previously been linked to Otmar Szafnauer, a speculation he disputed in November, Szafnauer left Aston Martin last week.
