Marc Marquez completed a flawless weekend at Misano to surge into the MotoGP championship lead for the first time this season.
The eight-time world champion’s victory in the main race, combined with his earlier win in the Saturday Sprint, delivered a maximum 34-point haul that erased a once seemingly insurmountable 102-point deficit he carried after the Italian Grand Prix earlier in the year.
In one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent MotoGP history, Marc Marquez now shares the top of the standings with Aprilia’s Jorge Martin on 274 points apiece, but the Spaniard holds the advantage by virtue of having secured five Grand Prix victories compared to Martin’s solitary win.
The championship battle which had appeared to be drifting toward a coronation for Martin during the mid-season rounds, has exploded into a three-way fight with Marco Bezzecchi still mathematically in contention despite a disastrous opening-lap crash that left the Italian 33 points adrift in third place.
