Arrow McLaren’s perfect strategy calls and a late caution helped Pato O’Ward win the 2025 Ontario Honda Indy Toronto as series leader Alex Palou faltered to 11th after his pit strategy gamble backfired midrace.
Known for his relentless determination but previously challenged by the Toronto street circuit, O’Ward’s win marked a huge breakthrough, securing his first victory on the Exhibition Place track after years of struggle and frustration.
The race was contested on a challenging 11-turn, 2.874-kilometre street course, expanded this year to 90 laps, demanding precision and strategic ingenuity to navigate the tight confines and punishing walls.
Pole position was held by defending champion Colton Herta, who once again demonstrated strong qualifying speed and early pace as he led the initial stages of the race. However, the unfolding events would soon disrupt the established order.
From the outset, tire strategy played a pivotal role in shaping the race. Most drivers including O’Ward started on the less favored alternate Firestone Firehawk tires, known for their softer compound but shorter durability and lower overall grip once heat cycles set in.
O’Ward and a select few opted for an early pit stop under green flag conditions to switch to the more durable and grippier primary tire compound.
The tactical play allowed him to preserve optimal performance for the majority of the race, even though it necessitated a three-stop race strategy.
The timing could not have been better, as a full-course caution on Lap 3 facilitated safe tire changes and bunched up the field.
The first of five full-course yellows came after Scott McLaughlin suffered a critical failure as his left rear tire detached after a pit stop. His team had attempted an early switch from the alternate to the primary tires, but a lug nut failure sent the No. 3 car careening into the Turn 2 wall, ending his race prematurely.
Later, Josef Newgarden was involved in a spectacular incident where rookie Jacob Abel’s car ended up on top of his after a Turn 1 scuffle, while Will Power crashed into the wall battling side-by-side on Turn 3.
Throughout the race, drivers on the alternate tires such as Rinus VeeKay and Kyffin Simpson initially maintained strong positions near the front, leveraging the initial grip advantage.
Yet, as the race progressed and the grip levels of the alternate tires understandably faltered, their performance dipped, allowing others like O’Ward to capitalize.
Pato O’Ward’s drive was characterized not only by excellent timing but by composed driving, especially in the race’s closing stages where track position and caution management were critical.

The final stages were dominated by an intense duel involving Nolan Siegel and Felix Rosenqvist. However, in an unfortunate turn with three laps remaining Rosenqvist lost control entering Turn 10, colliding with Siegel.
This incident halted their runs and brought out another full-course yellow. Given that overtaking under yellow is not permitted and only two laps were remaining, the race was effectively sealed.
Thus, O’Ward who was running just behind Siegel and Rosenqvist before the crash, inherited the lead and held on to claim the 2025 Honda Indy Toronto victory, his second win of the season across consecutive race weekends and ninth overall.
Pato O’Ward win also narrowed the championship points gap down to 99 as series leader Alex Palou faltered to 11th after a pit strategy gamble backfired midrace.
Behind O’Ward, Rinus VeeKay finished a strong second notching his fifth career podium and first since 2022, with Kyffin Simpson claiming a deserved third, making it his maiden podium in his sophomore year in the series.
Colton Herta despite starting from pole settled for fourth while the remainder of the Andretti Global contingent filled fifth and sixth with Marcus Ericsson and Kyle Kirkwood, respectively.
Interestingly, the lone Canadian driver on the grid, Devlin DeFrancesco, was sidelined somewhat by a mishap on Lap 37 after an accident caused light damage to his car. Although he managed to finish the race, he was eight laps behind O’Ward, marking a tough day for the hometown competitor.
