Oscar Piastri takes F1 Miami GP win in dominant McLaren 1-2 finish

Oscar Piastri led his teammate Lando Norris to a dominant McLaren 1-2 finish to claim the 2025 F1 Miami GP win, further extending his lead in the Formula 1 World Championship.

The Australian’s fourth win of the season-and third consecutive victory-highlighted McLaren’s resurgence and their growing supremacy in the 2025 campaign.

The race held at the Miami International Autodrome was packed with drama, strategic battles and standout performances across the grid, solidifying the event as a pivotal moment in the season.

From the outset, the race promised excitement with several drivers in contention for F1 Miami GP win. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen started from pole position and was immediately embroiled in a fierce battle with Lando Norris into Turn 1.

Verstappen’s aggressive defense forced Norris wide, dropping the Briton down to sixth place and allowing Mercedes’ rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Piastri to move up the order.

The stewards reviewed the incident but deemed no further action necessary, letting the title protagonists continue their duel.

Oscar Piastri who had started fourth wasted no time asserting himself and by lap 4 he had overtaken Antonelli for second place with his relentless charge also appearing to close the gap to Verstappen.

The Australian’s efforts paid off on lap 14 when Verstappen under intense scrutiny out-braked himself at Turn 1.

Piastri seized the opportunity, executing a decisive cutback to snatch the lead. Verstappen frustrated with his car’s braking performance could only watch as the McLaren pulled away.

Meanwhile, Lando Norris began his recovery drive showcasing both his racecraft and the pace of the MCL39. He fought his way back up the order overtaking Alex Albon, George Russell and Antonelli.

Norris then set his sights on Verstappen, eventually passing him after a series of tussles, though he briefly had to relinquish the position before making the move stick once more. By the time Norris secured second place his teammate had already built a commanding lead at the front.

A virtual safety car was deployed after a collision between Alpine’s Jack Doohan and Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson resulting in Doohan’s retirement. This neutralized the race briefly and prompted a strategic flurry in the pit lane.

Both McLaren drivers pitted for hard tires on lap 29 in a perfectly executed double-stack stop, maintaining their 1-2 positions as they rejoined the track. The threat of rain loomed but never materialized allowing the race to play out under dry conditions.

From that point, McLaren’s superiority was clear. Piastri and Norris steadily extended their gap over the rest of the field with Piastri ultimately claiming F1 Miami GP win, crossing the finish line 4.63 seconds ahead of his teammate.

George Russell secured the final podium spot for Mercedes but his deficit of over 37 seconds to Piastri underscored just how dominant the papaya cars were in Miami.

Behind the leading trio, Verstappen struggled to recover from his earlier mistake and could only manage fourth place. The Dutchman’s frustration was evident as he lamented his car’s braking issues over the radio and admitted he simply lacked the pace to challenge the McLarens on the day.

Williams’ Alex Albon produced a standout drive to finish fifth ahead of Antonelli who impressed in his rookie season by securing sixth place for Mercedes.

Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton found themselves locked in a tense intra-team battle ultimately finishing seventh and eighth. Carlos Sainz, took ninth for Williams while Yuki Tsunoda overcame a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane to claim the final point in tenth for Red Bull.

Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls) narrowly missed out on points in eleventh followed by Esteban Ocon (Haas), Pierre Gasly (Alpine), and Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber) in 12th to 14th, respectively.

Further down the order, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll endured a difficult weekend for Aston Martin finishing 15th and 16th.

Several drivers failed to finish: Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls), Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber), Oliver Bearman (Haas) and Jack Doohan (Alpine) all retired due to various incidents with Doohan’s crash triggering the only virtual safety car of the race.
