Sergio Perez’s exit officially confirmed with Red Bull yet to name replacement for 2025 F1

Sergio Perez‘s exit from Red Bull Racing has been officially confirmed, marking the end of a four-year tenure as the team prepares to replace him for the 2025 F1 season.

The announcement, made on December 18, 2024, follows a tumultuous year for the Mexican driver, whose performance declined sharply compared to his teammate Max Verstappen who dominated the championship and secured his fourth consecutive world title.

Sergio Perez’s exit from Red Bull comes after a tumultuous 2024 season for Perez, who had been under contract until 2026. The mutual agreement to terminate the contract was finalized shortly after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where discussions about the team’s future direction took place.

The split was not entirely unexpected, given Perez’s declining performance throughout the season where he finished eighth in the Drivers’ Championship with just 152 points. His inability to secure a podium finish since April and a mere 21 points across the last ten races prompted Red Bull to reconsider their driver lineup.

The disappointing performance was a stark contrast to his previous seasons, where he played a pivotal role in helping Red Bull clinch two Constructors’ Championships and achieve a historic 1-2 finish in the Drivers’ Championship in 2023.

Red Bull Racing confirmed Sergio Perez’s exit in a statement released on social media: “After four incredible seasons together, Oracle Red Bull Racing and Sergio Perez have reached an agreement to part ways.”

Perez also expressed gratitude for his time with Red Bull and reflected on his journey with the team, highlighting key achievements such as multiple Grand Prix victories and significant contributions during what he described as the team’s most successful era in Formula 1.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the past four years with Oracle Red Bull Racing and for the opportunity to race with such an amazing Team,” he said.

“Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable experience and I’ll always cherish the successes we achieved together. We broke records, reached remarkable milestones, and I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many incredible people along the way.

“A big thank you to every person in the Team from the management, engineers and mechanics, catering, hospitality, kitchen, marketing and communications, as well as everyone at Milton Keynes, I wish you all the best for the future.

“It has also been an honour to race alongside Max as a teammate all these years and to share in our success. A special thank you to the fans around the world, and especially to the Mexican fans for your unwavering support every day. We’ll meet again soon. And remember…Never give up.”

Red Bull team members react on Sergio Perez’s exit

Red Bull’s team principal Christian Horner acknowledged Perez’s contributions during his tenure. He described Perez as an “extraordinary team player” who significantly impacted the team’s success.

“I would like to thank Checo for all he has done for Oracle Red Bull Racing over the past four seasons,” Horner said. “From the moment he joined in 2021 he proved himself to be an extraordinary Team player, helping us to two Constructors’ titles and to our first 1-2 finish in the Drivers’ championship.

“His five wins, all on street circuits, were also a spectacular mark of his determination to always push to the limit. While Checo will not race for the Team next season, he will always be an extremely popular Team member and a treasured part of our history. Thank you, Checo.”

Max Verstappen also took a moment to acknowledge his former teammate on social media, sharing memories of their time together at Red Bull and expressing gratitude for their shared successes.

The camaraderie between the two drivers was evident throughout their time together, particularly during their joint achievements that helped elevate Red Bull’s status in the sport.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure driving alongside you,” Verstappen wrote on X. “We’ve had some amazing moments together that I’ll always remember. Thank you, Checo!”

The message was accompanied by three images. One shows the former teammates walking to driver introductions together, while the second shows Perez offering Verstappen a hug after a race. The final is an image of Verstappen and Perez celebrating a 1-2 finish with the whole Red Bull team.

While Sergio Perez’s exit has now been confirmed, it remains to be seen who will take over his seat alongside Verstappen. However, sources indicate that Liam Lawson is favored for promotion from Red Bull’s junior team while there is also speculation regarding Yuki Tsunoda as a potential candidate.

The decision is expected to be finalized soon as the Milton Keynes outfit looks to solidify its lineup ahead of the 2025 F1 season.

Sergio Perez’s exit from Red Bull raises questions about his future in Formula 1. At 34 years old, he faces uncertainty regarding his next steps and while he has expressed a desire for a “sabbatical” from racing for 2025 F1, there are concerns that this could signal an end to his career in Formula 1 altogether.

His departure comes at a time when several teams are actively seeking new talent and could potentially open doors for other opportunities within or outside of F1.

Max Verstappen’s baby: F1 champion celebrates birth of first child with Kelly Piquet

The joyful news that Max Verstappen’s baby girl, Lily, was born came on Friday as the four-time Formula 1 World Champion and his partner Kelly Piquet took to social media to welcome their first child together. The announcement, made on May 2, 2025, sent waves of congratulations throughout the motorsport world and beyond, marking a new chapter not only in Verstappen’s illustrious career but also in his personal life. Verstappen, at just 27 years old, has already etched his name into the annals of Formula 1 history. His relentless drive, tactical acumen and raw speed have earned him four World Drivers’ Championships, making him one of the sport’s modern legends. Yet, as he shared the first images of his newborn daughter Lily with the world, it was clear that this victory was of a different, profoundly personal nature. In a heartfelt post on social media, Max Verstappen and Kelly Piquet expressed their overwhelming joy, writing, “Welcome to the world, sweet Lily. Our hearts are fuller than ever – you are our greatest gift. We love you so much.” The announcement was accompanied by touching photographs: one of baby Lily’s tiny hand grasping a parent’s finger and another of the new family together, radiating happiness and serenity in the hospital room. Max Verstappen’s baby, Lily, comes at a particularly eventful time. The Red Bull Racing star was scheduled to participate in the Miami Grand Prix – the sixth round of the 2025 Formula 1 season – but he chose to remain in Europe to be by Kelly’s side for the birth of their daughter. Red Bull confirmed his absence from Thursday’s media day, stating, “All is well and he will attend track tomorrow for the race weekend.” This gesture of prioritizing family over professional obligations was met with widespread support and admiration from fans, colleagues, and the wider Formula 1 community. Messages of congratulations poured in from all corners, including from Red Bull principal Christian Horner, Verstappen’s sister Victoria, and fellow drivers such as Alpine’s Jack Doohan and former F1 driver Roberto Merhi Muntan. For Verstappen, fatherhood is a new journey but not an entirely unfamiliar one. Since 2021 he has been in a relationship with Kelly Piquet, a successful model, columnist and media professional who is herself a scion of racing royalty. Kelly is the daughter of three-time Formula 1 World Champion Nelson Piquet and Dutch model Sylvia Tamsma and she has carved out her own impressive career in the worlds of fashion, media and public relations. Fluent in multiple languages and with nearly two million followers on Instagram, Kelly’s presence in the paddock is both influential and inspiring. Before welcoming Lily, Kelly was already a mother to Penelope, her daughter from a previous relationship with former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat. Verstappen has embraced the role of a “bonus dad” to Penelope, forming a close bond with her over the years. In his first interview after Lily’s birth, Verstappen reflected on this experience, saying: “I’m kind of like a bonus dad already with my girlfriend having a daughter, so I saw her grow up since she was one.” This foundation, he noted, has helped prepare him for the joys and responsibilities of fatherhood and he expressed confidence that he would find his own unique way to balance his new family life with the demands of elite motorsport. The arrival of Lily was not entirely unexpected by fans and followers of the couple. Verstappen and Piquet had announced the pregnancy in December 2024, sharing a tender image of Verstappen’s hand on Kelly’s belly with the caption: “Mini Verstappen-Piquet on the way. We couldn’t be happier with our little miracle.” The anticipation built steadily over the ensuing months, culminating in the joyous announcement just ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. The timing of Lily’s birth added a layer of poignancy to the Miami race weekend. Verstappen who had recently claimed victory at the Japanese Grand Prix and sits third in the drivers’ standings arrived in Miami late Thursday after spending precious days with his newborn and partner. Despite the whirlwind of travel and the pressures of competition, Verstappen’s demeanor was one of contentment and gratitude. “Luckily, I got to spend a few days with them once she was born,” he told ESPN. “It’s been great. You never really know what to expect but it’s been very enjoyable and very special.” The Formula 1 fraternity also gave overwhelmingly positive sentiments to celebrate Max Verstappen’s baby girl. Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari’s leading driver and Verstappen’s long-time rival, extended his best wishes during the official Miami GP press conference. “I just wish him all the best. It’s such an amazing, special thing. I spoke to him briefly in Saudi and saw how excited he was. Big congrats to him.” The sentiment was echoed by fans and teams alike, with many noting the symbolic significance of Verstappen’s new role as only the second current father on the F1 grid, following Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg.
