Chaotic Monaco Grand Prix crash ruins F1 support race

The dramatic 11-car pile-up during Formula 2 feature race topped the list of Monaco Grand Prix crashes which also extended to F1 following Pierre Gasly’s incident.

The streets of Monte Carlo, already renowned for their tight confines and unforgiving barriers, witnessed one of the most dramatic opening laps in support race history as a 11-car pile-up at the first corner triggered an immediate red flag.

The Monaco Grand Prix crash unfolded at the iconic Sainte Devote turn involved McLaren junior and pole-sitter Alex Dunne who suffered a sluggish start, allowing ART Grand Prix’s Victor Martins to surge ahead.

As the pack funneled into the narrow first corner Martins edged into the lead but Dunne unwilling to relinquish his position made a critical misjudgment. The resulting contact saw Dunne’s front end collide with the side of Martins’ car, sending both drivers hard into the barriers.

With the streets offering little room for error or escape, the collision triggered a massive pile-up. The congestion at the first corner was so severe that one of the Formula 2 cars was briefly launched airborne while several others were unable to avoid the wreckage.

In total, 11 cars were involved in the incident, leaving debris strewn across the circuit and marshals scrambling to clear the track. The race was immediately suspended under red flag, with officials requiring significant time to recover the damaged vehicles and ensure safety for all participants.

Remarkably, no drivers were injured despite the ferocity of the crash and the extensive damage to multiple cars.

The fortunate outcome was a testament to the robust safety standards in modern motorsport, but it did little to alleviate the frustration and disappointment felt by the drivers and teams involved.

Porsche Supercup cars crash at Sainte Devote

Meanwhile, Porsche Supercup cars marked the second crash of the day as oil was left spewing out onto the Monaco Grand Prix track just hours before the Formula 1 race.

In an almost identical incident to the one earlier in the day, a multi-car pile-up of Porsches happened on the exit of Sainte Devote after Marvin Klein and Keagan Masters made contact at Turn 1, crashing into the barriers.

Gasly and Bortoleto suffer F1 Monaco Grand Prix crashes

The Formula 1 series also witnessed a Virtual Safety Car in the opening laps, triggered by Gabriel Bortoleto’s crash into the barriers. Fortunately, his Sauber did not sustain any damage and he was able to rejoin the race.

The second crash happened on Lap 8, involving Pierre Gasly who collided with the back of Yuki Tsunoda’s Red Bull at the Nouvelle Chicane, smashing his left-front suspension.
