McLaren chrome livery makes special return for F1 British GP

The reveal, which took place at the vibrant McLaren Racing Live: London event in Trafalgar Square, drew a large crowd of passionate fans and marked a significant moment in the lead-up to the F1 Silverstone race weekend.

This event was designed to bring the team closer to its fanbase especially as McLaren prepares for its home Grand Prix, a race that has always held special significance for the Woking-based outfit.

The new livery officially revealed through a video dubbed “Legacy at Speed,” is a celebration of McLaren’s legacy both on and off the track.

It draws direct inspiration from the chrome designs that adorned McLaren’s cars during the V8 era from 2006 to 2014, a period that saw the team achieve considerable success and cement its place in Formula 1 folklore.

This connection is further highlighted by the integration of Google Chrome’s signature colors—red, yellow, green, and blue—into the race suits of drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris who will be donning predominantly black overalls with the vibrant stripes running down the sides.

McLaren’s Official Primary Partner Google Chrome is at the heart of the livery concept. The chrome finish dominates the side and rear of the MCL39 chassis and also features prominently on the nose.

As Louise McEwen, Chief Marketing Officer of McLaren Racing, hailed the livery as a bridge between McLaren’s rich racing heritage and the digital speed that Google Chrome represents.

“We know that, while we have millions of fans who have been with the McLaren Formula 1 Team for decades, there are millions more who are new to the sport and the team,” McEwen said.

“Being able to celebrate and showcase our long history with the help of Chrome is a fantastic way of bringing these newer fans on the journey with us.

“To celebrate with so many of our fans in London this week as we get ready for our home race makes it even more special!”

Adrienne Lofton, Vice President of Global Product and Integrated Marketing at Google, echoed this sentiment expressing pride in the collaboration and the opportunity to bring the energy of the paddock directly to the fans.

“Google Chrome is proud to join McLaren for McLaren Racing Live: London at Trafalgar Square to reveal the iconic McLaren Chrome livery.

“Google Chrome provides unparalleled speed and performance to McLaren and consumers worldwide. We’re excited to help bring the Paddock energy to fans in advance of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.”

This is not the first time McLaren has revisited the chrome aesthetic in recent years. The team first reintroduced a chrome-inspired livery at the 2023 British Grand Prix followed by another iteration at the 2024 United States Grand Prix in Austin.

However, the 2025 “Legacy at Speed” livery is the most comprehensive homage yet, with a greater emphasis on chrome and a more pronounced connection to the team’s heritage.

Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris will be at the center of attention in this weekend’s F1 Silverstone as they take to the track in their newly adorned MCL39s.

Norris who is coming off a remarkable victory at the Austrian Grand Prix and is currently trailing Piastri by just 15 points in the Drivers’ Championship, will be especially motivated to deliver a strong performance in front of his home crowd.
