Indy 500 Prize Money 2025: Alex Palou takes home hefty payday

Alex Palou was awarded a staggering $3.8 million in Indy 500 Prize Money 2025 following his maiden event win – Checkout what every driver earned.

The 2025 Indianapolis 500 saw the largest purse ever awarded in the event’s history with a total of $20,283,000 distributed among the 33 starters, marking a significant milestone for the sport and its participants.

Palou’s victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was rewarded with a staggering $3.8 million prize—the largest winner’s payout ever for a first-time victor, according to official IndyCar announcements.

This figure while slightly less than the $4.3 million Josef Newgarden took home in 2024 is notable because Newgarden’s total included a $440,000 bonus from BorgWarner for achieving back-to-back Indy 500 wins.

Palou’s earnings which represent nearly 20% of the total purse, underscore the financial significance of winning the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and the continued growth of the sport’s financial rewards.

The distribution of the Indy 500 prize money 2025 followed the established pattern, with the winner receiving the lion’s share and the remaining funds being allocated progressively down the finishing order.

The purse is funded by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the NTT IndyCar Series, sponsors, and television revenue, and it has grown steadily over the years—from $16,000,200 in 2022 to $17,021,500 in 2023, and then to a record $18,456,000 in 2024, before reaching this year’s unprecedented $20.28 million.

This upward trajectory reflects the increasing popularity and commercial success of the event, as well as the introduction of new revenue streams such as the IndyCar charter system, which provides higher payouts to chartered teams like Chip Ganassi Racing.

Alex Palou’s $3.8 million payday is the result of several factors: his status as the race winner, the laps he led during the event, and his performance in qualifying and practice sessions.

Historically, winners receive between 15% and 20% of the total purse and Palou’s earnings are consistent with this trend. In addition to the base winner’s share, he earned bonuses for leading laps—each lap led is worth between $5,000 and $10,000, adding tens of thousands to his total.

Special awards for fast practice laps and qualifying performances also contributed to his final payout.

Behind Palou, the prize money distribution was as follows: Pato O’Ward, who was promoted to second place following a post-race penalty for Marcus Ericsson, took home nearly $1 million.

However, recent reports provide some discrepancies in the exact finishing order and payouts with at least one source listing David Malukas in second with $667,300 and O’Ward in third with $951,000.

For the purposes of this report, the most widely cited figures indicate that O’Ward received close to $1 million for his podium finish, with Felix Rosenqvist earning $769,500 for fourth place. Santino Ferrucci also received more than $700,000, highlighting the lucrative nature of top-five finishes at the 2025 Indianapolis 500.

Special awards and bonuses were added to the earnings of select drivers. Robert Shwartzman, the pole-sitter and Rookie of the Year, received a $50,000 bonus, bringing his total earnings to $327,300.
