Arvid Lindblad replaces Yuki Tsunoda in British GP FP1

Red Bull junior Arvid Lindblad runs Yuki Tsunoda’s RB21 during opening practice for Formula 1 British Grand Prix.

This move marks a significant milestone for the 17-year-old British-Indian-Swedish racing sensation as he gets to make his F1 debut in an official event while fulfilling Red Bull’s strategy in nurturing young talent in the highest echelons of motorsport.

Lindblad’s inclusion in the British GP FP1 is the culmination of a remarkable journey and burgeoning career through the junior racing ranks.

Despite not yet being 18 years old—he turns 18 in August—Lindblad has already made waves in Formula 2, notably becoming the youngest winner in F2 history after his victory in the sprint race at Jeddah earlier this season.

His consistent pace, maturity, and professionalism have caught the attention of Red Bull’s senior management, prompting the team to seek an early FIA Super License exemption for him, a request that was granted just weeks before the British Grand Prix.

Who is Arvid Lindblad? Fast rising Red Bull junior poised for F1 stardom

Speaking to Formula 1’s official website, the top Red Bull junior prospect expressed his excitement at the opportunitiy.

“I am very excited to be driving during FP1, driving in an official F1 session is going to be a very special moment,” he said. “It is something I have dreamt of for a long time.

“To get a first taste of F1 with Oracle Red Bull Racing as well, after being with the Junior Programme for almost five years, is really special to me. This is an amazing opportunity, and I am super grateful to everybody at Oracle Red Bull Racing for it.”

“And to be making my F1 debut as a British driver, on a British track, in front of a British crowd, is going to be really amazing.”

“My aim is to get up to speed in the car really quickly, get Yuki good data to help him across the weekend, lead the team in a good direction and try to drive quickly as well! I can’t wait to hit the track and get going.”

The backdrop to Lindblad’s debut is a period of introspection and recalibration for Red Bull Racing. The team which has enjoyed a dominant run in recent years currently finds itself trailing in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.

Reigning F1 world champion Max Verstappen is 61 points adrift of leader Oscar Piastri after a retirement in Austria, while Red Bull sits fourth in the Constructors’ standings well behind McLaren.

These challenges have intensified scrutiny on the team’s driver lineup, particularly Yuki Tsunoda whose recent performances have come under the microscope.

The decision to give Arvid Lindblad a run in FP1 is widely interpreted as both a reward for his promise and a signal that Red Bull is actively evaluating its options for the second half of the season and beyond.

For Yuki Tsunoda, the decision to step aside for FP1 at Silverstone is a stark reminder of the relentless pressure that comes with a seat at Red Bull.

While such substitutions are common practice and mandated by the regulations, the timing and context of Lindblad’s debut have fueled speculation about Tsunoda’s future with the team.

Red Bull’s history of promoting young drivers—sometimes abruptly—means that every opportunity given to a junior is closely watched, both within the paddock and by fans worldwide.

Should Tsunoda’s performances not improve in the coming races, Lindblad’s successful integration into the F1 environment could position him as a serious contender for a full-time seat.
