Invincible Palou takes Sonsio Grand Prix victory, marks 4th win in 5 races

Alex Palou’s relentless dominance continued at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he claimed Sonsio Grand Prix victory to mark his fourth win in the 2025 IndyCar Series.

The remarkarble win also marked his third consecutive triumph at the event setting a new record, underlining his status as the driver to beat in the championship chase.

The race unfolded on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course – a layout that has become a showcase for Palou’s strategic acumen, technical precision and the superior performance of the Chip Ganassi Racing Honda team.

From the outset, the anticipation was palpable. Alex Palou was the clear favourite to clinch the 2025 Sonsio Grand Prix victory having secured the NTT P1 Award with a deft display of tire strategy and raw speed during qualifying.

The green flag waved under clear skies and the field surged into Turn 1 with Graham Rahal executing a bold maneuver to wrest the lead from Palou on Lap 2.

Rahal piloting the No. 15 Fifth Third Bank Honda for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing capitalized on a fresher set of Firestone Firehawk alternate tires, setting the stage for a tense strategic battle.

Rahal’s early pace was impressive and he led the majority of the opening laps maintaining a slender advantage over Palou. The two drivers were locked in a high-speed chess match with Palou never allowing more than a second’s gap.

Rahal’s ability to defend his position was a testament to his own skill and the performance of his Honda, but as the race wore on tire degradation and the relentless pressure from Palou began to tell.

Meanwhile behind the leading duo Pato O’Ward in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet was a constant presence, shadowing the leaders and waiting for any opportunity to pounce.

The complexion of the race shifted as teams cycled through their first pit stops. Strategy played a pivotal role with Palou and his crew opting to save a fresh set of alternate tires for the final stint – a decision that would prove decisive.

As the laps ticked by, Rahal’s rear tires began to lose grip and Palou sensing his moment made a calculated move to overtake on Lap 58. After taking the lead, Palou proceeded to stretch his advantage demonstrating the superior pace and handling of the Ganassi machine.

However, the race was not without drama. A late caution on Lap 69 involving David Malukas – the first in the series since the season opener at St. Petersburg – bunched the field and temporarily erased Palou’s commanding 10-second lead.

The crowd at Indianapolis Motor Speedway responded with enthusiasm sensing the possibility of a late-race showdown. However, Alex Palou was unfazed as he immediately reasserted his dominance on the restart, pulling away from O’Ward and methodically rebuilding his advantage with each passing lap.

Palou ultimately took the checkered flag to claim the 2025 Sonsio Grand Prix victory with a commanding 5.484 seconds, a gap that could have been even larger in the absence of the caution.

Graham Rahal’s early heroics faded as tire wear took its toll and he slipped down the order to finish sixth ahead of Marcus Amstrong. Kyle Kirkwood emerged as the highest-finishing Andretti driver, securing eighth place and delivering the team’s 11th top-10 finish on the Indianapolis road course.

However, Andretti faced a challenging afternoon. Colton Herta who started 13th made early gains but was forced to retire due to mechanical issues as was teammate Marcus Ericsson.

AJ Foyt Racing also endured a character-building race with Santino Ferrucci encountering technical problems as early as the morning warmup.

The implications of Palou’s victory extend beyond the immediate euphoria of the podium. With 12 races remaining in the 2025 IndyCar Series, the prospect of challenging the all-time series record for victories in a single year-currently held by legends A.J. Foyt and Al Unser at 10-has become a realistic target.

Palou’s march toward a fourth Astor Challenge Cup as series champion in five years is gathering momentum and his rivals are left searching for answers to the Ganassi juggernaut.

For the fans, the 2025 Sonsio Grand Prix delivered a compelling blend of strategy, speed and drama. The event marks the official kickoff of the Month of May at Indianapolis setting the stage for the upcoming Indy 500.
