Alex Marquez wins British MotoGP Sprint, ends Marc’s streak

Alex Marquez seized victory in Saturday’s British MotoGP Sprint Race at Silverstone, ending his brother’s unprecedented run of six consecutive sprint wins.

Under chilly, overcast skies at the historic Silverstone Circuit, the racing was fierce, the strategies meticulous, and the performances across the grid showcased the relentless competitiveness that defines modern MotoGP.

The anticipation for the sprint was palpable, with Monster Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo having secured his third consecutive pole position. The Frenchman’s qualifying prowess has been a highlight of the season and as the lights went out, he capitalized on his starting advantage to claim the holeshot, leading the field into the opening corners.

The cold and windy conditions at Silverstone prompted nearly the entire grid to opt for soft compound tyres on both front and rear. Only Brad Binder and Lorenzo Savadori diverged, selecting the medium front tire in a bid to find extra stability in the tricky conditions.

As the pack thundered through the opening lap, Quartararo’s early lead was immediately threatened by the Marquez brothers.

Marc Marquez starting from fourth on the grid—his first time off the front row all season—wasted no time in muscling his way past both Francesco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez.

However, Marc’s stint at the front was short-lived after he ran wide at Village corner as he pushed to consolidate his advantage on the second lap.

The minor error proved costly as Alex Marquez who had just overtaken Quartararo moments earlier seized the opportunity to slip into the lead. From that point on, Alex rode with a blend of composure and determination that would define his race.

Despite the pressure from his elder brother, Alex managed the gap with precision while Marc, whose sprint dominance had been unchallenged all season, found himself unable to respond to the pace set by the Gresini Ducati rider.

Alex gradually extended his lead, eventually crossing the finish line 3.511 seconds clear of Marc, securing his first sprint win since Sepang 2023 and reducing Marc’s championship lead to 19 points.

Behind the Marquez brothers, Fabio Di Giannantonio executed a measured race, capitalizing on the struggles of Francesco Bagnaia who had initially looked set for a comfortable third place after overtaking Quartararo.

However, Bagnaia’s pace faded in the second half of the race and he was successively overtaken by Di Giannantonio’s Pertamina VR46 Ducati, Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi, and LCR Honda’s Johann Zarco, ultimately slipping to sixth at the flag.

Bezzecchi, meanwhile, delivered a strong performance for Aprilia Racing, finishing just behind in fourth while Zarco’s fifth place marked him as the fastest Honda rider on track.

Fabio Quartararo after his electric start found himself unable to maintain the early momentum. As the British MotoGP Sprint race progressed, he was gradually shuffled back eventually finishing seventh.

Although he missed out on a higher placing, Quartararo’s ability to convert pole positions into competitive race starts remains a positive for the Monster Yamaha team which continues to seek improvements in race pace.

Red Bull KTM rookie and one of the season’s standout newcomers Pedro Acosta finished eighth. However, his race was not without drama; on the final lap he was clipped at high speed by Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer, forcing the Spanish rookie to run wide and drop to 14th.

Jack Miller, representing Pramac Yamaha, also experienced a challenging race. Having started strongly, he lost ground as the laps ticked by, eventually finishing ninth and claiming the final sprint point.

Honda HRC’s Luca Marini rounded out the top ten, delivering a solid performance despite the fierce competition throughout the midfield.
