Max Verstappen summoned his trademark composure and delivered a lap of 1:24.892 to claim pole position ahead of McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris who secured second and third respectively.
George Russell slotted into fourth for Mercedes, narrowly ahead of Lewis Hamilton whose hopes of a home pole were dashed by a scruffy final lap that left him two-tenths off Verstappen’s benchmark.
Charles Leclerc qualified sixth in the sister Ferrari, his session solid but lacking the final spark needed to break into the front two rows.
The remainder of the top ten was rounded out by Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Haas’ Oliver Bearman, Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin, and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly.
Notably, both Antonelli and Bearman were hit with grid penalties after qualifying: Antonelli received a three-place drop for a previous incident involving Verstappen in Austria, while Bearman was handed a ten-place penalty for failing to comply with red flags in final practice.
