Lewis Hamilton set the time benchmark ahead of his fellow compatriot Lando Norris who came in just 0.023 seconds adrift, while championship leader Oscar Piastri completed the top three.
Charles Leclerc reinforced Ferrari’s positive start by securing fourth place, just over two tenths off his teammate, while George Russell led the Mercedes effort in fifth, a further half-tenth back.
Racing Bulls made a solid start to the weekend after Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson finished sixth and eighth, respectively, with Williams’ Alex Albon separating the duo in seventh.
Kimi Antonelli, carrying a three-place grid penalty into the weekend, was ninth for Mercedes while reigning world champion Max Verstappen rounded out the top ten.
