Kurt Busch to miss third NASCAR Cup race after Pocono crash

Kurt Busch will sit out Sunday’s race at Michigan International Speedway marking the third time in a row he will be missing in action due to concussion-like symptoms.

On July 23 Busch was hurt in a qualifying accident at Pocono Raceway. His vision and hearing “are still not 100% to drive” he claimed. He will be replaced by Ty Gibbs for his third outing in the No. 45 Toyota for 23XI Racing.

“I am continuing to make improvements every day,” Busch posted on social media. “I know Ty will continue to do a great job representing 23XI and the No. 45 Monster Energy team this weekend in Michigan.”

“I am working hard to get back to 100% and it’s my hope to be back in the car at Richmond Raceway. Thanks to everyone for the continued support and I look forward to being back on track soon.”

Busch later shared a video of himself at the Charlotte FC soccer game on Wednesday night, saying that his doctors had advised him to seek stimulation.

“Doctors said to get in loud, busy places, so I came to Charlotte FC,” Busch explained.

As the film came to an end, Busch grinned, closed his eyes, and stated, “It’s starting to give me a headache.” He was standing in front of a crowd of fans who were chanting and banging drums.

At Pocono and Indianapolis, Gibbs finished 17th, but Michigan will be his first classic circuit in a Cup car. If Busch makes the NASCAR playoff field, he will be guaranteed a berth thanks to a waiver. He does have a spot for the race on Sunday in Michigan thanks to his victory in Kansas in May.

“We’re looking forward to Kurt being back to 100% and on track,” 23XI said in a statement.

Depending on how other drivers perform while Busch is sidelined, he would drop that spot in the standings. The playoff field will be determined by the final four races.
