Liam Lawson will make his Formula 1 weekend debut with AlphaTauri at the Belgian Grand Prix weekend later this month.

Lawson, who competes full-time in the Formula 2 championship with Carlin, has been a member of the Red Bull Junior Team since 2019.

The New Zealand driver now holds the eighth position in the Drivers’ Championship with four races left in the 2022 season. He finished ninth in the F2 standings last year.

In an effort to give rookie drivers more track time in Formula One this year, all teams are required to give them two practice sessions. This means Lawson, who has already tested for AlphaTauri, will take the wheel of the team’s 2022 car at Spa-Francorchamps.

“We plan to run Liam Lawson in FP1 in Spa,” Franz Tost, the head of the AlphaTauri team, responded to a question regarding its plans for a rookie driver during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.

It is not yet known which driver will skip the Spa session before the other does likewise later in the season. While Yuki Tsunoda’s contract with AlphaTauri expires at the end of the current season, Pierre Gasly is currently under contract till the end of the 2023 season.

Lawson follows Juri Vips, who drove Red Bull’s RB18 car in Spain, as the second Red Bull junior driver to participate in an FP1 session this year.
