Bernie Ecclestone gets arrested in Brazil for illegal possesion of a firearm

Former F1 supremo, Bernie Ecclestone was arrested in Brazil for unlawfully bringing a gun on a private flight to Switzerland.

Bernie Ecclestone was arrested at Viracopos Airport in Campinas, Sao Paulo, according to a story in the Brazilian publication Globo.com.

The 91-year old was detained when an x-ray machine discovered a 32-calibre LW Seecamp pistol within his suitcase without the required paperwork. He admitted to having the gun, but said he was unaware it was in his luggage at the time, according to Reuters.

However, Ecclestone was released after paying R$6,000 in bond and was able to continue his journey to Switzerland.

Following the purchase of F1 by US media firm Liberty Media in January 2017, Ecclestone was forced to step down after a 40-year tenure at the helm.

Fabiana Ecclestone, Ecclestone’s wife, was elected as the FIA’s vice-president for sport at the conclusion of last year, under new president Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s leadership.
