Daytona and Le Mans hilariously rename chicanes after each other

The Bus Stop chicane at Daytona is now the Le Mans Chicane, while the first chicane on the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans is now the Daytona Chicane.

Organizers of the two tracks have been described as strengthening their relationship through the reciprocal agreement.

In addition to the curbing at the Bus Stop, the first Mulsanne chicane will mimic predominantly yellow colors of the kerbs at the Daytona International Speedway, which will be painted that same blue and yellow that can be seen around the 8.48-mile Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans.

The announcement comes after the premier Prototype class in the IMSA series and the World Endurance Championship, which is organized by Le Mans organizer the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, agreed to align their rules for 2023 – and a 10-year extension of their collaboration.

“The spirit of partnership between the IMSA and Daytona International Speedway team in Daytona Beach and the ACO in Le Mans has never been stronger,” IMSA President John Doonan said.

“Between the historic convergence for the top category of prototype racing, the recent 10-year extension of the IMSA-ACO partnership and today’s introduction of the Le Mans and Daytona Chicanes.”

“Together we are embarking on an amazing new era of sportscar endurance racing, unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”

During the race at Le Mans last summer, ACO president Pierre Fillon said that he came up with the idea alongside Doonan and IMSA chairman Jim France.

“When I spoke with Jim and John last August and we thought about this idea, I straightaway agreed because it is another step to make our partnership stronger,” he explained.

“This is a symbol of the strength of our partnership.”

Since 1990, when they were initially introduced to the four-mile length of public road that was previously the major route between the cities of Le Mans and Tours, the chicanes on the Mulsanne Straight have been named after a variety of companies.

Over the last 30 years, the gaming firms Forza and Playstation, as well as the L’Arche autoroute services business, have sponsored the first of the two Mulsanne chicanes.
